Highfrost: fully automated state-of-the-art frozen storage

Vanmarcke is building the future. With Highfrost, a fully automated frozen warehouse that meets the demand for greater capacity, flexibility and speed in food logistics. This unique project takes temperature-controlled storage in Belgium to the next level. Highfrost will be operational from mid-2026.

Automation in action

Located at our Gullegem site, Highfrost is the epitome of automation and sustainability. This 45m-tall fully automated warehouse includes a front extension for Value Added Logistics Services, offices and parking, covering 2.3 hectares in total.

The frozen food warehouse has space for 55,000 pallets and can handle 600 inbound, outbound and internal pallet movements per hour. The fully automatic box picking system is the only one in Belgium equipped with state-of-the-art robot and camera technology.

What makes Highfrost so special?

It’s the combination of automation, capacity and customer focus that makes this project so unique in the industry.

  • High processing capacity: Automated picking of 1200 boxes per hour, with sufficient capacity for up to 3000 boxes per hour.
  • Peerless precision: The most advanced AI-driven picking technology on the market.
  • Full flexibility: Standard storage and custom applications.
  • Fast and efficient: Rapid processing ensures short lead times.
  • Space for additional services: 3000 m² multilevel front extension accommodating value added logistics (VAL).

"Highfrost combines high-capacity conditioned storage with lightning fast handling and personalized VAL."

Sustainable down to the last detail

Sustainability is a key concern at Highfrost. From lower water consumption to greater energy efficiency: every aspect of the deep-freeze warehouse reduces our environment footprint.

  • Solar panels covering more than 7500m² generate green energy on site.
  • The 2D shuttle system uses recovered energy to charge the batteries.
  • Highly efficient refrigeration systems reuse residual heat for the offices and warehouse floor.
  • The frequency-driven refrigeration lowers energy consumption without compromising on performance.
  • Air-cooled condensers slash water consumption by more than 95% compared with regular water-cooled systems.
  • Rigorous waste management ensures virtually no non-recyclable waste is generated.
  • Quadcore insulation panels have the best insulation value on the market and keep noise levels down.

As well as charging stations for electric cars and bikes our plans also include extensive parking for trucks with a power supply for refrigeration units. Why is that good? Zero diesel consumption, lower carbon emissions and no noise nuisance for neighbours.

What’s next?

Highfrost is scheduled to open in mid-2026. But that’s just the beginning. A packing facility for unpackaged products will be added in due course, as Highfrost continues to develop into a one-stop storage and handling partner of dry, cooled and frozen food.
